Vir Biotechnology (Vir), a San Francisco company focused on developing cures for infectious disease, seeks a Manager, Research Operations.  Reporting to the SVP Research Operations and working closely with the EVP Research & Chief Scientific Officer, you will focus on supporting research management across Vir’s early stage research programs. Being the right-hand to the SVP Research Operations, you’ll work with a variety of research teams to accelerate Vir’s growth.


  • Support leaders in the research organization to ensure research programs are properly planned, tracked, resourced and prioritized to maximize effective and efficient execution.
  • Develop and manage timelines for internal and external research programs
  • Create and maintain project plans, timelines, agendas, budgets, resourcing requirements, rolling summaries and other tools required to facilitate planning and coordination of deliverables for projects.
  • Develop tracking tools and support the maintenance and accuracy of key deliverables.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders across research to build highly compelling presentations for company-wide meetings, external, speaking engagements, and written communications. 
  • Assist in the organization and preparation of grant and partnership proposals with academic institutions, government agencies, industry and foundations and oversee grant management activities for the research organization.
  • Support research leads in collaboration activities with external partners. 
  • Support strategic projects as requested in partnership with Operations, Business Development, Finance, Clinical Development and Human Resource teams.
  • Collaborate with the program leadership function to ensure best practices are followed company-wide and that the organization is making the best use of tools and systems.


  • Exceptional project management skills, specifically timeline and budget development and oversight with hands-on experience from preclinical through early clinical development.
  • 5+ years research project management or consulting experience in a relevant industry/academic setting with a focus in infectious disease. 
  • BARDA, DARPA, NIH, or NGO grant experience is highly preferred. 
  • Excellent oral, written and scientific presentation communication skills are required. 
  • High Emotional Intelligence and ability to establish strong and trusting relationships. 
  • Possesses a high degree of scientific and ethical integrity. 
  • Strong strategic thinking with high energy level and the ability to thrive in a dynamic, entrepreneurial, ambiguous, fast-paced, respectful environment. 
  • Detail-oriented organizational and program management skills to manage a wide range of incoming requests and responsibilities. 
  • Displays the highest levels of resilience, embracing challenges and setbacks inherent in science. 


  • PhD (highly preferred) or MS in microbiology, immunology, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related scientific field is required.
